Professor Girolamo Fiorentino is an archaeobotanist specialising in human–environment interactions across the Mediterranean. His research centres on the exploitation of plant resources, the reconstruction of past environments through charcoal and carpological analysis, and the role of agriculture in shaping cultural landscapes.
He has conducted extensive palaeobotanical studies on archaeological deposits and Holocene environmental sequences across Italy and the wider Mediterranean. Prof. Fiorentino has also coordinated and co-directed major archaeological projects at Ebla, Tell Touqan, and Qatna in Syria; Hierapolis and Yumuktepe in Turkey; Monastiraki in Crete; and Chersonesos in Ukraine. He is a member of several leading scientific societies, including the Italian Botanical Society (SBI), the Italian Committees for Prehistoric and Classical Archaeology, the Society of Italian Medieval Archaeologists (SAMI), the International Biogeography Society (IBS), the International Association for Charcoal Research (IACR, of which he is a founding member), the International Work Group for Palaeoethnobotany (IWGP), and the International Association of Wood Anatomy (IAWA).
