AGRI-DRY doctoral researcher Wudu Abiye from the University of the Witwatersrand recently held an outreach and dissemination workshop in Ethiopia, bringing together farmers and representatives from government and non-governmental organisations.
Wudu shared preliminary findings from his PhD research and discussed them with participants working directly with land degradation and sustainable land management. Farmers were central to the exchange, sharing their experiences of changing land conditions, agricultural practices and the challenges they face on the ground.
The workshop created an opportunity to connect AGRI-DRY research with local knowledge and practical experience. These discussions can help researchers better understand how scientific findings relate to conditions experienced by farming communities and how research can contribute to conversations around sustainable land management.
Within AGRI-DRY, Wudu’s PhD investigates agricultural practices and land degradation in sub-Saharan Africa. His research combines geospatial and hydrological approaches with field-based and ethnographic work to better understand the links between farming practices, environmental change and land degradation.
The workshop was supported by the AGRI-DRY Doctoral Network, funded by the European Union and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
